Body Mass Index – a tool for assessing obesity or overweight

Obesity or overweight is becoming a common problem in majority of population throughout the globe and Body Mass Indicator or BMI is a fair tool to assess it. It is a statistical measure based on the height and weight of the person.

Obesity is and must deal with the firm commitments otherwise it can lead to severe consequences. It is one of the primary factors for many diseases and for a healthy and fit life, every obese person needs to loose his or her weight. Although there are possibilities of numerous errors while calculating BMI, it is easy and that’s why BMI is still the most preferred tool to assess the body weight.

BMI has been categorized into various categories as shown in below.

Underweight < 18.4
Normal weight 18.5 to 22.9
Overweight 23.0 to 27.5
Obese 27.6 to 40
Morbidly obese > 40

BMI is used by all over world for recording obesity and underweight categories in people of all ages. You too can check your BMI by using the above formula and if it is above 27.5, you must do something for your weight loss.
